What do you need to register for?

BEFORE YOU MOVE:

Secure a Long-Stay Visa (Visa de Long Séjour):

  - Apply at the French consulate in your home country for stays over 90 days.  

  - Gather required documents: passport, proof of financial means, proof of accommodation, etc.

 

ONCE YOU'VE MOVED:

Residency Registration:

  - Book an appointment at your local prefecture to apply for a residence permit (Titre de Séjour).  

  - Documents needed: passport, proof of address, financial proof, and visa.

 

Healthcare Registration: 

  - Apply for a Social Security Number (Numéro de Sécurité Sociale) via your employer or the CPAM office.  

  - Documents needed: residence permit, proof of address, work contract.  

  - Receive your Carte Vitale for public healthcare access.  

  - Consider supplemental insurance (mutuelle) for additional coverage.

 

Open a French Bank Account: 

  - Provide a valid passport or residence permit.  

  - Proof of residence (e.g., utility bill or rental contract). 

  - Proof of income (e.g., work contract or payslips).

 

Secure Accommodation: 

  - Prepare a rental dossier with: proof of income, guarantor (if needed), references, and ID copies.  

  - Be ready to pay a deposit and possible agency fees.

 

Set Up Utilities and Internet: 

  - Electricity and Gas: Choose providers like EDF, Engie, or TotalEnergies.  

  - Water Supply: Contact your local authorities.  

  - Internet and Mobile: Packages available from Orange, SFR, Bouygues, and Free.

 

Register for Taxes:  

  - Visit the local tax office (Service des Impôts) to register. 

  - File annual tax returns each spring, typically online.

 

Enrol Your Children in School (if applicable): 

  - Public school registration is free and done at the local Mairie.  

  - Required documents: birth certificate, proof of residence, immunization records.  

 

Driving in France (if applicable):

  - Exchange your foreign driver’s license if necessary, depending on your country of origin.  

  - Research public transport passes like Navigo in Paris or similar options for affordable commuting.
