If you are planning to move to France, your driving licence is probably not at the top of your list of things to think about. But if you are taking your car with you or plan to drive regularly, it is something you will need to understand.

The rules changed following Brexit, but the good news is that UK driving licences can still be exchanged for French licences without taking another driving test, provided you meet the relevant conditions.

For UK licences issued before 1 January 2021, you can generally continue using your licence in France while it remains valid. If it has expired, or has less than six months left to run, you will need to exchange it for a French licence.

If your UK licence was first issued on or after 1 January 2021, different rules apply. If you become resident in France, you generally need to exchange it within 12 months of becoming resident.

The exchange is handled online through the French ANTS system. You will normally need to provide your UK licence details and obtain a check code from the DVLA so that your driving entitlement can be verified.

It is also worth remembering that you cannot simply change the address on your UK driving licence once you move abroad. GOV.UK advises that you should deal with the driving licence authority in your new country of residence.

If you are moving to France, therefore, add your driving licence to your relocation checklist. Keep an eye on its expiry date, understand when you need to exchange it and make sure you have the necessary documentation ready.

For most people, it is simply another piece of French administration to work through. Once you've got your French licence, though, you can get back to the much more enjoyable business of exploring your new home.
