We spoke with a relocation expert to talk through the visa process for when you are moving from the US to France. Have a watch here, or read through the process below.
Firstly, do you even need a Visa?
US citizens can visit France for up to 90 days within a 180-day period without a visa. However, for stays exceeding 90 days, a visa is required. Starting in 2025, travellers will also need to apply for the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) before visiting Europe.
Types of Long-Stay Visas
For stays longer than 90 days, consider the following visa options:
Visitor Visa (VLS-TS Visiteur): Ideal for retirees or individuals wishing to live in France without working. Applicants must demonstrate sufficient financial means, typically around €120 per day.
Work Visa (VLS-TS Salarié): For those employed by a French company. The employer usually initiates the application process.
Student Visa (VLS-TS Étudiant): For students enrolled in French educational institutions.
Family Visa: For individuals joining family members residing in France.
Each visa type has specific requirements and documentation. Detailed information is available here: https://france-visas.gouv.fr/en/visa-application-guidelines
Application Process
1. Determine Visa Type: Use the Visa Wizard to identify the appropriate visa for your situation.
2. Online Application: Complete your application through the France Visas portal.
3. Schedule an Appointment: Book an appointment with a visa application centre to submit your documents and biometric data.
4. Track Application: Monitor your application's progress via your France-Visas account.
Life in France: What to Expect
Adjusting to life in France involves navigating cultural differences and administrative processes. For instance, one American who moved to Paris noted challenges like setting up a bank account and understanding local customs. However, many find the quality of life, healthcare, and public transportation to be significant advantages.
